Deleting Stock Applications from HTC Desire (Android, Root)

After flashing the new DJ Droid 2.2 Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720294 there were some things that didn’t please me. There were still the stock applications like Plurk or Stock that didn’t seem necessary to me and only take up capacity.

Here is how to remove them:

You will need:

Windows (yeah, I know..)

Desire

Micro USB cable

Android SDK http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

Windows Push Files http://www.mediafire.com/file/xm3wzndnevj/pushfiles_windows.zip

USB Drivers for your Desire http://rapidshare.com/files/406670261/usb_driver.zip.html

How to do it:

  1. Unzip (not install) the Android SDK
  2. unzip the Push Files Zip
  3. Unzip the USB driver
  4. When your HTC Desire is on, connect it to the Pc and let it install the USB Driver
  5. Turn the Desire off
  6. Boot your Desire in Recovery Mode (Press and hold the Volume down and Power Button, Choose with the Volume Up and Down Buttons the Recovery entry, press the Power Button)
  7. A red triangle will appear on the Desire
  8. On the PC, open the pushfiles folder and run recovery-windows.bat
  9. A green text will appear on the Desire (this takes a few seconds)
  10. Open a new command prompt (On the PC: Run, cmd.exe)
  11. Browse to your Android SDK folder (using dir and cd)
  12. Browse to the Tools folder
  13. You have to mount the /system folder:
    adb shell mount /system
  14. Show the list of installed apk files
    adb shell ls /system/app/
  15. Move the programs to a new folder on the SDcard (for backup, they will be deleted on the system partition
    adb shell mount /sdcard
    adb shell mkdir /sdcard/device_files
    adb mv /system/app/Stock.apk /sdcard/device_files
  16. Repeat the very last line for all the apk and odex you don’t want on your phone anymore
  17. Thats all folks, the applications are gone
A really great source of information is the forum of xda-developers, especially this link:
