How-to: Ubuntu and VPN

Many Universities use VPN to connect securely to the University network. They recommend the Cisco VPN program for Ubuntu, but there is a better solution. VPNC can get the job done, an it is a sweet console program. Here is how to install it:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install vpnc

gksu gedit /etc/vpnc/default.conf

Enter the VPN details of your University. For the University of Trier:

IPSec gateway 192.168.168.2
IPSec ID Funklan
IPSec secret drahtlos

Save and you’re done.

If you connected to the Network of your universite, open a Terminal window and enter:

sudo vpnc

Done.

If you want to disconnect:

sudo vpnc-disconnect
